Conjunctival Foreign Body
What is it?
Airborne flecks that strike the eye often find their way to the of the upper lid. With each blink, the foreign body abrades the cornea, visible with fluorescein staining as a vertical line or lines.
What to do?
- Inspect the cornea for foreign bodies under magnification.
- Stain with fluorescein to visualize abrasions.
- Evert the upper eyelid, check out the pretarsal sulcus, and remove any foreign bodies with a cotton-tipped applicator.
- If there are any corneal abrasions, instill a topical antibiotic and arrange a follow-up examination in 24 hours to make sure the abrasion has healed.
