The Eyes Have It

Acute Persistent Visual Loss: Endophthalmitis

Endophthalmitis

What causes it?
Infection enters the eye through a traumatic or surgical wound or from an endogenous site. Pus fills the aqueous and vitreous. Severe eye pain is usually present.

What to do?
Refer immediately. The patient will have to undergo needle aspiration of the intraocular fluids to determine the causative organism. At the same time, anti-microbial agents may be injected into the vitreous cavity.
