Case 9 Teaching Points

  • Etiology secondary to abnormal vitreous or epiretinal membrane traction.
  • Three times more common in women
  • Typically occurs in the sixth to eighth decade
  • Macular holes also caused by high myopia and blunt ocular trauma
  • Treatment of full-thickness macular hole involves vitrectomy, with or without membrane peel, followed by gas bubble tamponade which causes centripetal movement of displaced photoreceptors into the macular hole
