Case 84 Diagnosis

Snowflake vitreoretinal degeneration

Differential Diagnosis

  • Juvenile retinoschisis: snowflake degeneration does not have the sharp convex posterior border of juvenile retinoschisis; also, unlike patients with juvenile retinoschisis, those with snowflake vitreoretinal degeneration can have fairly good electroretinogram responses
  • Wagner’s disease: process occurs in deep retinal layers with atrophy of the inner retinal layers; higher incidence of retinal detachment
  • Stickler’s syndrome: lacks vascular sheathing, disappearance of peripheral retinal vessels, has higher incidence of retinal detachment
  • Lattice degeneration: somewhat similar, but not associated with presenile cataracts or sheathing of retinal vessels
  • Snail-track degeneration: somewhat similar, but not associated with presenile cataracts or sheathing of retinal vessels
