Case 7 Teaching Points

  • Most common ocular opportunistic infection in AIDS patients
  • Typically seen in patients with CD4 count < 50
  • Lesions typically found along major vascular arcades
  • Serial fundus photos useful in documenting progression
  • Can be asymptomatic, so dilated fundus exam is indicated every 3 months while
  • CD4 < 50
  • Treat with ganciclovir, cidofovir and foscarnet
  • Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment occurs in one-third of patients with CMV retinitis
