Case 35 Teaching Points

  • Nodular thickening of the basement membrane of the retinal pigment epithelium
  • Basal laminar drusen are seen more easily on fluorescein angiogram
  • Basal laminar drusen predispose patients to develop vitelliform exudative macular detachment
  • Can cause decreased central vision
  • Spontaneous resolution of subretinal fluid can occur
  • Some patients may have geographic atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium
