- Nodular thickening of the basement membrane of the retinal pigment epithelium
- Basal laminar drusen are seen more easily on fluorescein angiogram
- Basal laminar drusen predispose patients to develop vitelliform exudative macular detachment
- Can cause decreased central vision
- Spontaneous resolution of subretinal fluid can occur
- Some patients may have geographic atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium
