Case 161 Teaching Points

  • Idiopathic condition characterized by well-subscribed serous retinal detachment
  • Etiology likely secondary to decompensated retinal pigment epithelium pumping function
  • Typically seen in healthy Caucasian/Asian/Hispanic men, 25-55 years of age.  Can be seen in women.
  • Associated with Type A personality, steroids, stress
  • Asymptomatic or acute blurry vision, micropsia, metamorphopsia, paracentral scotoma, decreased color vision
  • Photocoagulation at fluorescein leakage sight induces rapid remission; no significant difference in final visual acuity
  • Most cases resolve spontaneously within a few months
  • Visual acuity returns to 20/25 or better (<5% of all cases experience severe, permanent visual loss)
