Case 11 Teaching Points

  • Caused by progressive contraction of fibrovascular membranes over area of vitreoretinal attachment
  • Treatment is with vitrectomy and removal of the fibrovascular tissue and repair of any retinal breaks or detachments
  • Favorable prognostic factors include:
    • Good preoperative visual function
    • Age less than 40
    • Absence of rubeosis iridis or glaucoma preoperatively
    • Prior panretinal photocoagulation
