Tractional retinal detachment secondary to proliferative diabetic retinopathy

Differential Diagnosis

  • Tractional retinal detachment: can also occur in the setting of sickle cell retinopathy, retinopathy of prematurity, toxocariasis and trauma
  • Tractional retinoschisis: the retinal split is usually inferotemporal and commonly bilateral. Retinoschisis also presents with "sheathing" of the vessels and "snowflakes" that are persistent Müeller fibers. Optical coherence tomography can help make the correct diagnosis
