New Faculty

We are pleased to announce that the Milford, Michigan ophthalmology practice of Robert Arends, M.D., has become part of the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center. Dr. Arends is a comprehensive ophthalmologist who received his M.D. from Wayne State University and completed his ophthalmology residency at the Kresge Eye Institute. We welcome Dr. Arends, his staff, and his patients into the Kellogg family.

Christina Bruno, M.D., has joined the glaucoma faculty of the Kellogg Eye Center. Dr. Bruno comes to Kellogg after completing her glaucoma fellowship at the University of Iowa and her residency at the University of Pittsburgh Eye and Ear Institute, where she won the Research Award for her presentation at the 2000 Residents Research Day.

Helios Leung, O.D., Ph.D., has joined the faculty of the Kellogg Eye Center providing optometric services in the Contact Lens and Low Vision Service. Dr. Leung received a Ph.D. in molecular biophysics and biochemistry from Yale and his O.D. from the New England College of Optometry. He performed his optometric residency at the V.A. Medical Center in American Lake, Washington.

Honors

Wayne Cornblath, M.D., has been invited to join the Editorial Board of Neuro- Ophthalmology. He has also been asked to participate in the Annual Meeting Abstract Review Committee for the North American Neuro-Ophthalmological Society.

Paul Lichter, M.D., received the Life Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in recognition of his extensive contributions to the Academy’s leadership and to its scientific and educational programs.

David Musch, Ph.D., has been invited to be a faculty member for a course at ARVO on “Clinical Trials in Eye Research: A Hands-on Workshop with the Experts.” He was recently a member of the AAO Cornea/External Disease Panel where appropriate guidelines for clinical practice are formulated.

Donald Puro, M.D., Ph.D., has been chosen to participate in a congressionally mandated NIH update of recent progress and future opportunities in diabetes research.

Anand Swaroop, Ph.D., received a 2001 Inventor Recognition Award from the U-M
for the Nrl knockout mouse.

Susan Thoms, M.D., has been chosen to participate in the AAO’s “Global Diabetic Retinopathy Project Workshop,” whose goal is to simplify the staging of diabetic retinopathy and implement the new guidelines world-wide. The task force consists of representatives from the U.S., Europe, South America, and Asia.

Presentations and Publications


James L. Adams, M.D., presented a talk on cataracts to the Ann Arbor Breakfast Optimist Club.

Radha Ayyagari, Ph.D., had a paper, “Evaluation of the ELOVL4 Gene in Patients with Age-related Macular Degeneration” published in the December issue of Ophthalmic Genetics.

Wayne Cornblath, M.D., recently presented Visiting Professor Grand Rounds at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C.

Mark Johnson, M.D., presented “Retinal Causes of Unexplained Visual Loss” and “Complications of the Early Stages of Posterior Vitreous Detachment” at the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. At the Vitreous Society Meeting in November he spoke on “The Vitreofoveolar Traction Syndrome: Clinical Characteristics and Surgical Management” and at a symposium during the AAO Annual Meeting he presented “Choosing the Best Therapy for Eyes with Subfoveal Choroidal Neovascularization.”

Paul Lichter, M.D., and David Musch, Ph.D., had two papers published in the November issue of Ophthalmology and presented at the AAO Annual Meeting: “Interim Clinical Outcomes in the CIGTS Comparing Initial Treatment Randomized to Medications or Surgery” and “The CIGTS: Interim Quality of Life Findings after Initial Medical or Surgical Treatment of Glaucoma.”

Venkat Reddy, Ph.D., has had two papers published recently in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, entitled “Glutathione Peroxidase-1 Deficiency Leads to Increased Nuclear Light Scattering Membrane Damage and Cataract Formation in Gene Knockout Mice” and “Lens Epithelium-derived Growth Factor: Increased Survival and Decreased DNA Breakage of Human RPE Cells Induced by Oxidative Stress” and another paper in Gene, “Functional Analysis of the Promoter and Chromosomal Localization for Human LEP503, a Novel Lens Epithelium Gene.”

Alan Sugar, M.D., published an AAO Ophthalmic Procedures Assessment in Ophthalmology on “Intrastromal Corneal Ring Segments for Low Myopia” and another in January on “Laser in Situ Keratomileusis for Myopia and Astigmatism – Safety and Efficacy.”

Anand Swaroop, Ph.D., has published “Gene Expression Profile of Native Human Retinal Pigment Epithelium” in the March issue of Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science.

Debra Thompson, Ph.D., published a paper, “Clinical Course and Visual Function in a Family with Mutations in the RPE65 Gene” in Archives of Ophthalmology in January.

Andrew Vine, M.D., presented “The Role of Thrombophilia in Retinal Vascular Occlusions” during Retina Subspecialty Day prior to the AAO Annual Meeting.
