Program of the Year

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences was named 2000 Program of the Year by the University of Michigan Health System. In awarding the honor, the department was commended for its tradition of innovation, high standards and dedication to patient care. “We knew from surveys that we had relatively high levels of patient satisfaction, but we also knew we could do better,” says departmental administrator, Perry Schechtman. This past year the department was able to reduce patient wait times as well as offer free parking. The department’s customer service program, “Just Outdo Yourself,” or “JOY,” was also praised. Through the JOY program staff members can identify problem areas both for patients and for employees, and work to improve them. Internally, the JOY program has provided a public vehicle for employees to recognize each other for outstanding performance, work together to solve problems, and have a voice for making the department better for staff and patients alike. Department chair, Paul R. Lichter, M.D., noted, “It is a special honor to be recognized as a standout program in an outstanding institution like ours. The excellence here reflects the day-to-day strong commitment of our fine faculty and staff.”
