She is no stranger to Ann Arbor, having received her medical school degree from the University of Michigan.Honors Radha Ayyagari, Ph.D., has received one of the first grants funded by the Michigan Life Sciences Corridor. Her project, entitled Molecular Genetics of Atrophic Macular Degeneration, will identify the genes involved in causing late-onset atrophic macular degeneration. Dr. Ayyagari is going to be working with four large 4- and 5-generation families who suffer from this form of age-related macular degeneration. Her goal is to understand the role genes play in the various forms of macular degeneration. Susan Gromacki, O.D., M.S., was tapped as one of the top twelve female optometrists in the country by the American Academy of Optometry and, as such, asked to participate in a roundtable discussion of the issues concerning women in optometry at the organizations annual meeting. Anand Swaroop, Ph.D., chaired the Animal Models of Retinal Degeneration session at the Fifth Annual Vision Research Conference in April. In June, he will chair the session on Biology and Chemistry of Vision at the FASEB Summer Research Conference. Debra A. Thompson, Ph.D., has been appointed an Executive Editor of Experimental Eye Research, the official journal of the International Society for Eye Research. Mark W. Johnson, M.D., was invited to present two talks at the Aspen Retinal Detachment Society: Clinical Insights into Pathogenesis of Retinal Detachment Associated with Optic Pits and The Spectrum of Vitreomacular Traction. His paper, Perifoveal Vitreous Detachment Is the Primary Pathogenic Event in Idiopathic Macular Hole Formation was published in the February issue of Archives of Ophthalmology. Paul R. Lichter, M.D., presented a talk, Glaucoma Surgery, in Santiago, Chile, at the Pan American Glaucoma Society meeting. Along with a Chilean collaborator he also evaluated a large family with inherited glaucoma. Last fall he traveled to Beijing to evaluate a glaucoma genetics family, as well as to present a paper on glaucoma genetics to the Afro-Asia Congress, which was meeting in Guangzhou. David C. Musch, Ph.D., was invited to write a special editorial for the January issue of the Archives of Ophthalmology discussing The Barbados Eye Study, which examined the incidence of open-angle glaucoma in Barbados over a four-year period. While on sabbatical at the Salk Institute, Anand Swaroop, Ph.D., presented talks on the regulation of gene expression at Stanford, Jules Stein, University of Washington, and USC.
