Roger F. Meyer, M.D. (residency 1971) and Judy Gordon, D.V.M., were married on May 26, 2001. Dr. Meyer is currently on retirement furlough.

William Selezinka, M.D.
(residency 1973), has been awarded a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition by the United States Congress for his outstanding, long-term efforts in bringing eye care to Ukraine.

Michael R. Petersen, M.D., Ph.D.
(residency 1990), has had a paper published in the July issue of Ophthalmology, entitled “Indocyanine Green-assisted Peeling of the Retinal Internal Limiting Membrane During Vitrectomy Surgery for Macular Hole Repair.”

Daniel C. Schainholz, M.D. (residency 1991), spent 2 1/2 weeks in Mahdya Pradesh, Northern India last October training local eye care providers and presenting talks at the Inaugural Conference on Low Vision sponsored by the Indian Society for the Prevention of Blindness. In

February, Dr. Schainholz traveled to Bangladesh and followed that up with a trip to Ukraine where he trained local eye care professionals and treated patients. Dr. Schainholz practices in the San Francisco Bay area and specializes in low vision and visual rehabilitation.

Ronald E. Warwar, M.D. (residency 1996), had an article published in the July issue of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, entitled “Social Implications of Blepharoptosis and Dermatochalasis.”

Douglas G. Katz, M.D. (residency 1998) and Linda K. Sherman, M.D. (residency 1999), were married February 21, 2001. They live in Kentucky.

Parag Gokhale, M.D. (residency 1999) had a paper, “Sleep Disorders: A Risk Factor for Normal-Tension Glaucoma?” published in the June issue of the Journal of Glaucoma.

Karin R. Sletten, M.D. (residency 2001) and Ayad A. Farjo, M.D. (residency 2000; cornea fellow 2001) were married May 5, 2001. They are at the University of Iowa, where Ayad is on the cornea faculty and Karin is taking a vitreoretinal fellowship.

Hideki Chuman, M.D. (neuro-ophthalmology fellow 2001) and his wife, Tomomi Chuman, M.D., are the proud parents of Haruka Ann Chuman, born February 23, 2001. The Chuman family has returned to Japan, where Dr. Chuman is on the faculty at Miyazaki Medical College.

Maya Eibschitz, M.D. and her husband, Omer Tsimhoni, had a beautiful baby boy, Liam Jonathan, on Friday, July 6. Dr. Eibschitz thoroughly enjoyed her maternity leave and is now back full-time in the residency program.

In Memoriam
We mourn the passing of Manos A. Petrohelos, M.D., of Athens, Greece, who completed his residency in 1954.


Ophthalmologists from Around the Country Attend
73rd Annual Spring Conference

Last June over 150 physicians spent two days at the Kellogg Eye Center learning about the most recent advances in cornea, external diseases, and refractive surgery. Kellogg Eye Center cornea faculty Alan Sugar, M.D., H. Kaz Soong, M.D., Roger Meyer, M.D., and Qais Farjo, M.D., were joined by six other cornea experts from around the country in presenting this conference.

Musson Heads State Medical Society

Kenneth H. Musson, M.D. (residency 1969) was elected the 136th president of the Michigan State Medical Society on May 5, 2001. The Society, founded in 1866, supports 14,000 Michigan physicians as they care for and enhance the health of Michigan citizens.

Dr. Musson completed both his medical school and ophthalmology training at UM. He has been an active member of our Department’s Alumni Advisory Board since its inception in 1991. A Fellow of both the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Musson belongs to many other medical organizations, and has served as a director or officer in all of them. Former Department Chair, John W. Henderson, M.D., Ph.D., describes Ken Musson as “one of the brightest residents ever to go through our program.”

Paul R. Lichter, M.D., current Chair of the Department, offers his congratulations, noting that “Ken Musson is an individual of great integrity. We need people like Ken leading our organizations to assure that issues affecting our patients get addressed properly. The physicians and people in the State of Michigan are in good hands.”
