Around the Department Harjeet Kaur, M.D., has joined the faculty of the Kellogg Eye Center as a comprehensive ophthalmologist, seeing patients in our Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti offices. Dr. Kaur completed her residency in ophthalmology at the Mason Institute of Ophthalmology at the University of Missouri. Before beginning her residency training, Dr. Kaur was a visiting research scholar at Mason Institute studying binding sites of alpha-crystallin in the bovine lens. Bradley W. Taylor, O.D., M.P.H., optometrist, has joined the Kellogg Eye Center faculty, seeing patients in our Ann Arbor and Livonia offices. After graduating from Ferris State College of Optometry with distinction, Dr. Taylor entered the U-M School of Public Health, where he received a Masters of Public Health in the field of Health Policy and Administration. Prior to arriving in Ann Arbor, Dr. Taylor was on the faculty at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis.Honors Mark W. Johnson, M.D., has been awarded a grant to perform Phase II/III studies of anti-VEGF aptamer for subfoveal choroidal neovascularization in age-related macular degeneration. David C. Musch, Ph.D., has been invited to join the Editorial Board of Neuro-Ophthalmology, the official journal of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmological Society. Julia E. Richards, Ph.D., was awarded a five-year grant, Expression Profile Approach to Glaucoma Gene Detection, from the National Eye Institute. This project will use microarray technology to study human glaucoma genes in an effort to determine which ones should be screened for mutations in glaucoma populations. H. Kaz Soong, M.D., has been chosen to be editor for the Refractive Surgery edition of Current Opinion in Ophthalmology. Anand Swaroop, Ph.D., has been selected by The Foundation Fighting Blindness to be Coordinator/Director of the Center for Retinal and Macular Degeneration at the UM Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences. Jonathan D. Trobe, M.D., has been named Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology, the official peer-reviewed journal of the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society. It is published quarterly. Presentations and Publications Wayne T. Cornblath, M.D., presented a talk, Frequency and Pattern of Diplopia in Giant Cell Arteritis at last Mays American Academy of Neurology Meeting and Normal Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate in Biopsy-Proven Giant Cell Arteritis at the 2001 North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society Meeting. Jerome I. Finkelstein, M.D., has been asked to speak on Diabetes and the Eye, at the 3rd Annual Type 2 Diabetes Update, sponsored by the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe. Mark W. Johnson, M.D., presented a talk at ARVO entitled The Vitreofoveolar Traction Syndrome: Clinical Characteristics and Management and has been invited to speak at the Retinal Diseases in the Elderly Symposium at the AAO Annual Meeting on Choosing the Best Therapy for Eyes with Subfoveal Choroidal Neovascularization. Debra A. Thompson, Ph.D., has had a paper published in the June issue of Nature Genetics, entitled Mutations in the Gene Encoding Lecithin Retinol Acyltransferase Are Associated with Early-Onset Severe Retinal Dystrophy. Donna M. Wicker, O.D., has written a chapter on keratoconus for the NORD Guide to Rare Diseases with Ayad A. Farjo, M.D., Bradley W. Taylor, O.D., M.P.H., and Susan Gromacki, O.D. |
