Ophthalmology Residents and Research

Research
Each first-year resident initiates a research project under the guidance of one of our research faculty or under the direction of a clinician. Formal presentations of this project are required at the end of the second and third years. Our Department bestows two prizes for resident research. The 2003 winner of the Slocum Award for resident research was Maya Eibschitz, M.D., third-year resident at the time, for her ongoing project, "A Molecular Approach to the Management of Graves Eye Disease." The LaBerge Award honors research by a first-year resident and is given out only occasionally. Sunir Garg, M.D., now a faculty member at Washington University, is the most recent recipient of this award, which he received for his project, "Fibroblast Growth Factor Stimulates Hepatocyte Growth Factor Synthesis in Cultured Human Retinal Pigment Epithelium."

Travel
Each year, all third-year residents attend the annual meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. In addition, any resident who is first author on a presentation of research performed at Kellogg is able to attend annual meetings of the AAO and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. Our alumni and friends have established endowments that support resident research and travel for those who are presenting papers or posters.

Research Day
Our annual Research Day showcases the most recent scientific investigations of our house offices, fellows, and faculty. Their latest finding will be presented through papers and posters in a broad range of topics covering the gamut of basic and clinical science.
