University of Michigan Ophthalmology Observership Program

International Physician Observers are physicians selected to visit the Kellogg Eye Center to observe practices in their designated specialty. These valued members of the international ophthalmologic community are welcome to submit applications with the support of their department chief. Because of licensing and immigration laws in the United States, physician observers may not provide direct patient care.

This program is not funded by the Kellogg Eye Center, and all expenses, including travel, liability insurance, and in-country accommodations, are the responsibility of the physician observer. To be accepted into the program you must have completed your residency program and have a good command of the English language. Applications are competitively reviewed, and accepted physician observers will be notified by mail or e-mail. Once approved, individuals will be considered for J1 Visa status, if appropriate, to facilitate their observership. Per University guidelines, other types of Visas are not available. Observerships are currently offered in all subspecialities of ophthalmology except Vitreoretinal Surgery.

The number of observerships offered is limited. Prior to downloading the application form, please contact Jennifer Kromrei for information on the availability of observerships in each subspecialty.

Download the Observership Application Form (pdf). You will need Acrobat Reader installed on your computer to view the Observership Application Form. If you don't already have Acrobat Reader, download Acrobat Reader free.

Applicants should submit the completed application and a $50 application fee to:
