The U-M Kellogg Eye Center Expansion Opens in March 2010
Residents at the U-M Kellogg Eye Center will train in one of the newest and largest eye centers in the country. A few facts you should know:
The Eye Center expansion opens its doors to patients on March 1, 2010. - The building is grand in scale, with 230,000 square feet dedicated to patient care, research, and medical education.
- The size of the center will allow for significant faculty recruitment, increasing the number of faculty in a Department known for its depth in the ophthalmic subspecialties.
- The 8-story facility will house all seven eye care clinics, with new suites for refractive surgery and cosmetic surgery. Supporting services include genetic counseling, ophthalmic photography, diagnostic electrophysiological testing, and ocular prosthetics.
- Six operating suites, equipped with integrated communications technology, will allow surgeries to be broadcast to the auditorium or the residents’ conference room.
- The clinics have been designed for efficiency as well as comfort, allowing patients to move easily through their appointments.
- The center is home of the Delores S. and William K. Brehm Center for Type 1 Diabetes Research and Analysis, providing opportunities for collaboration among ophthalmology and diabetes scientists.
- A large open laboratory for vision research occupies one floor in the new building; it is connected to the current Kellogg Tower, where research continues in laboratories located on four floors.
