David earned a B.A. in anthropology and computer engineering from Case Western Reserve University and an M.A. in anthropology from Pennsylvania State University. He then obtained his Ph.D. in anthropology from Penn State, where his work centered on reconstructing social aspects of the ancient Maya of Copan, Honduras, from their diet, using stable isotope bone chemistry.
Prior to joining Kellogg, David served as a Research Fellow in the UM Department of Biostatistics' Genome Science Training Program. He conducted some of the first research of mitochondrial DNA of the ancient Maya. He analyzed mtDNA sequences collected from populations from Tibet, Bolivia, and Ethiopia, as part of a project aimed at understanding human biologic responses to high altitude living.
In the Zack's laboratory, David conducts molecular biological research and statistical analysis aimed at understanding the genetics of heritable eye diseases, gene expression over time during retinal detachment, and intraocular immunological reaction over time from endophthalmitis.
In his free time, David enjoys road cycling, foreign travel and archaeology.

Jean earned an M.D. from the University of Si-Chuan Medical College in China. The focus of her thesis work was the investigation of the mechanisms of immunosuppression in cancer.
Before joining Kellogg, Jean worked as a biochemist studying the isolation and characterization of protein enzymes from animal tissues. She also has studied western blotting, immunoprecipitation, enzyme activity assay, gene therapy, cell culture, extraction of DNA and RNA, gene cloning, immunohistochemistry, paraffin and frozen tissue sectioning, and variety type staining.
Jean joined the Zacks lab in 2002 and currently focuses on apoptosis pathway studies and therapy with apoptosis inhibitor antibodies and genes on an animal model.
