Research Focus

Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness and with more than 60 million people blind from glaucoma worldwide there is a clear need for major advances in diagnostics, treatment, and understanding of the mechanisms by which disease develops and progresses. My research program is focused on the genetics of primary open-angle glaucoma and angle-closure glaucoma.

My postdoctoral research focus was on gene localization and cloning using the positional cloning strategy. Some of my work in the past has led to the discovery of a gene causing posterior polymorphous corneal dystrophy, which led to important new insights into disease mechanism. I have also worked extensively on studying the glaucoma genes for variations in their protein coding DNA sequences in patients that have primary open angle glaucoma of various subtypes.
