Zong-Mei earned an M.S. in Cellular and Molecular Biology from Eastern Michigan University and received an M.D. from the China Unite Medical University (8 year medical program).

For 18 years, before becoming a full-time vision science researcher, Zong-Mei was a clinical attending physician and ophthalmologist who also lectured and engaged in research. In 1991, she decided to devote her energies to lab research and joined the Elner lab in 1992. Currently, she studies the chemokine gene expression involved in the mechanisms of neovasculariztion, inflammation and apoptosis.

Dongli earned an M.S. in Biochemistry from Nanjing Medical University in Nanjing, China, an M.D. from Wannan Medical College in Wuhu, China, and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Beijing Medical University in Beijing. Her dissertation explored the screening and characterization of senescence-associated genes.

Immediately after receiving her Ph.D., Dongli completed two postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Michigan, the first in the Department of Pathology and the second in the Department of Cell and Developmental Biology. Dongli joined the Kellogg Eye Center in the Hughes lab in 2001 and became a Research Investigator in the Elner lab in the fall of 2004. She is currently conducting research on inflammatory mechanisms and wound healing in ocular diseases.
