Glaucoma is one of the nation's leading causes of blindness, especially among African-Americans and people over sixty years of age. There is no consensus as to the best initial treatment for glaucoma or for elevated intraocular pressure, which is a risk factor for people who develop glaucoma. Drs. Terry Bergstrom and Sayoko Moroi, two of the Department of Ophthalmology's glaucoma specialists, are co-investigators in the Ocular Hypertension Treatment Study. This long-term, multi-centered clinical trial is designed to determine whether medical treatment of elevated ocular hypertension delays or prevents the onset of glaucoma. Patients are randomized to treatment with medicines that reduce intraocular pressure or to observation without treatment. All patients are evaluated at regular intervals to monitor visual field loss and/or optic nerve damage.
